Description

24X36 Acrylic on canvas

When I moved from British Columbia to Alberta back in 1976, I had spent most of my life living in or near the mountains. I was used to having those mountains around me, almost like they were protecting and cradling the landscape. The wide open spaces of the Alberta prairies took some getting used to.

I had also never really experienced a prairie sunset. Up until then, painting the sky usually meant filling in the spaces between trees and mountain peaks. Suddenly, out on the prairie, the sky wasn’t just the background, it became the subject.

There’s something very comforting about watching the sun disappear across that huge open horizon. A Prairie Sunset is my way of capturing that feeling and the beauty I eventually discovered in the prairie landscape.
