Dragon Sky

I painted Dragon Sky from some sketches I had made several years ago after riding my Victory motorcycle near the Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum in northern Alberta. I remember coming across this really angry looking sky, with the light catching the clouds in a way that reminded me of a dragon’s breath.

Around the same time, the official name of one of the largest flying reptiles ever discovered was announced--Cryodrakon boreas, a massive flying reptile that soared over North America during the late Cretaceous period. Its name means “frozen dragon of the north wind.”

I had the sketches, I had the sky, and now I had the dragon. I had to paint it.
