Jim White Fine Art
Welcome to Jim White Fine Art
Canadian landscapes, painted from experience, memory and a lifelong connection to the outdoors.
Thanks for stopping by.
If you found your way here through one of my paintings, a business card, an art show, or one of my artwork information cards, welcome. I'm glad you're here.
I'm Jim White, a Canadian landscape artist living and working in Grande Prairie, Alberta. I've spent much of my life exploring the landscapes of Western Canada—hiking mountain trails, paddling northern rivers and lakes, wandering through the boreal forest, and experiencing the enormous skies and changing light of the prairies.
Those experiences are the starting point for my paintings.
I Paint the Feeling of the Landscape
I don't set out to create a photographic reproduction of a particular place.
Instead, I paint from my experiences, memories and impressions of being there. Many of my paintings begin with a sketch, a memory, or a moment that stayed with me long after I had left the landscape.
Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, I use bold colour, expressive brushwork and an impressionistic approach to capture the atmosphere and emotion of a place.
For me, a painting isn't just about what a landscape looks like.
It's about what it feels like to stand there.
The light coming through the trees.
The silence of a northern lake.
The first snow on the mountains.
A prairie sunset stretching from horizon to horizon.
The feeling of being surrounded by wilderness.
These are the moments I try to bring home and put on canvas.
A Painting Is Meant to Find Its Way Home
Every painting begins with an experience, but eventually it becomes part of someone else's story.
Maybe a particular landscape reminds you of a favourite place.
Maybe the colours bring back a memory.
Maybe it simply makes you stop for a moment and breathe.
That's what I hope my paintings do.
Take a look around. You may find a landscape that feels a little bit like your own.
